Why I'm asked Google Drive Permissions?uPod uses a server for exactly one reason: Backup and cross device synchronization of your episode states, playlist, playback position and more.
In the beginning I've provided my own server, but financing and maintaining a server for a free time project like uPod is hard to handle. As a result my server often was under high load or not available at all. That's why I've decided to switch to Google Drive which is highly available and free to use for you as a user and me as a developer.
The Google Drive connection was released with uPod 6. Normally only users which had enabled the cross device sync should have been asked for Google Drive permissions, but unfortunately I've made a tiny bug resulting in every user being asked for permission during update which resulted in some kind of a shit storm. I understand you and I'm really sorry for this. In the meanwhile uPod has been updated to only ask users with the cross device sync enabled for Google Drive permission.
Which of my Google Drive Data can uPod access?Short answer: None of your data.
Long answer: uPod uses a feature of Google Drive which allows apps to store data in Google Drive. For each of these application a private storage section is created. Applications with such a permission can only read from and write to their own storage section. So uPod can only read and write it's own data.
In fact if you are using Android's backup mechanism, you are already using Google Drive without even knowing it, because your Android backup is -- guess what -- also stored in Google Drive.
I want to use uPod without Google Drive. What to do?If you've never enabled the cloud sync in uPod then probably there is nothing you have to do. If you've instead once granted the Google Drive permission to uPod follow these steps to completely disable Google Drive usage in uPod and revoke the permission.
Disable Google Drive usage in uPod:
- In uPod choose Settings from the navigation bar on the left.
- Choose the section Synchronization.
- Disable the Cloud sync checkbox at the bottom of this section.
To revoke the permission you've granted to uPod do the following:
- Open Google Drive in your desktop browser.
- Click the settings symbol (gear symbol) in the upper right.
- Choose Settings from the drop down menu.
- In the Settings dialog choose Manage Apps from the navigation bar on the left.
- In the list search for uPod and click on its Options button.
- Choose Revoke connection to Google Drive.
